On February 10, 2023, at approximately 5:43 p.m., Madison Police responded to a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Washington Avenue and 10th Street in Madison, Illinois. Upon arrival, officers discovered a vehicle that had collided with a tree at high speed. The driver, later identified as 29-year-old Sterling D. Harrell of Granite City, was found with a gunshot wound to the head and injuries from the crash. He was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, February 12.
A second male passenger was also injured in the incident and transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Authorities have not released his identity.
The Madison Police Department, in collaboration with the Madison County Sheriff's Office Investigations Division and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services Command, launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and shooting. Evidence suggested that gunshots were fired before or after the collision. Investigators identified possible persons of interest and sought them for questioning. The Madison County State's Attorney's Office was also informed of the ongoing investigation.
