On February 16, 2023, Humberto Marin-Garcia, a 28-year-old man from Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot while driving on the Stevenson Expressway, which is also known as Interstate 55. The incident occurred around 9:20-9:30 p.m. near Ashland Avenue or Lock Street. Marin-Garcia was driving with his pregnant wife, Mayra Solis, who was reportedly six months pregnant, and their vehicle was hit by gunfire from another vehicle. Anthony Hospital as a precautionary measure.
Marin-Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooter fled the scene after firing the shots. An extensive investigation by the Illinois State Police, which included reviewing hours of surveillance videos, led to the identification of the suspected shooter's vehicle and its passengers.
On February 26, 2023, during a separate investigation, Chicago Police, assisted by the ISP North Statewide Anti-Violence Enforcement group, pursued the suspected vehicle. The pursuit resulted in the passengers being taken into custody, and one of the male passengers, Nicholas Samudio, 22, was identified as the suspect wanted for questioning in Marin-Garcia's homicide. Samudio was subsequently indicted on Monday for first-degree murder and is being held without bond at the Cook County Jail.
Nicholas Samudio, the suspect, is also facing charges in another murder that occurred in North Lawndale just 10 days after Marin-Garcia's death. Prosecutors have not revealed a motive for either of the murders. Samudio, who has Down syndrome, pleaded not guilty to the charges and was ordered to be held without bail.
