On March 4, 2023, Jamel Fields, a 28-year-old African American male, was fatally shot in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. in the 1000 block of West 59th Street. At the time, Jamel Fields was inside a vehicle when an unidentified assailant fired into the car, striking him in the left shoulder. Emergency responders transported him to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the shooting was allegedly connected to a road rage incident. According to prosecutors, earlier that day, Kevin McMurtry's wife was driving in the 1600 block of West 59th Street when another driver cut in front of her, causing her to swerve. Passengers in her vehicle contacted McMurtry, who then allegedly drove to the location, confronted the other vehicle, and fired a single shot from his car, striking Jamel Fields. McMurtry was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting.
Jamel Fields' death is one among many tragic incidents of gun violence in Chicago. His passing has been memorialized by community members and organizations dedicated to remembering victims of such violence.
