On April 17, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, resulting in the death of 20-year-old Isaiah Samaniuk. The incident took place in the 4900-block of South Calumet Avenue at approximately 12:10 a.m. when Samaniuk and a 22-year-old woman were victims of a carjacking attempt.
According to Chicago police, the victims were approached by two male suspects armed with handguns who attempted to take their car.
As the victims tried to drive away, the offenders shot at their vehicle. Samaniuk, who was driving the car, was shot multiple times and later pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center. The female passenger was shot in the foot and was transported to a hospital in good condition.
The incident was reported by nearby residents, including Leandra Brown, who heard about five loud shots and immediately checked on her daughter to ensure her safety. Brown expressed her concern about the safety of the area, stating that the incident was the "last straw" and that she was planning to move her family out of the neighborhood due to the high crime rate.
The police investigation, led by Area One Detectives, is ongoing, but as of the report, no one was in custody. The victims were not known to the police, and authorities were marking multiple shell casings and searching for leads in the case.
This incident is part of a larger trend of carjackings in Chicago, with over 1,600 armed carjackings reported in 2022 and 337 reported so far in 2023. The city saw a peak of 1,851 reported carjackings in 2021, significantly higher than the 603 reported in 2019.
