Keith J. Marrissette, a 34-year-old resident of Champaign, Illinois, died on June 25, 2023, at 1:08 a.m. due to injuries sustained from a shooting that occurred the previous night. The incident took place in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 2500 block of W. Springfield Ave in Champaign.
On June 24, 2023, Marrissette parked his vehicle in the parking lot and was shot repeatedly as he exited his car.
He managed to run to a nearby apartment after being shot, but his injuries were severe. Champaign Police responded to the scene around 11:08 p.m. and found Marrissette with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition until he succumbed to his injuries early the next morning.
The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Daviet Henderson of Champaign, fired the shots and then fled the area. It is believed that Marrissette likely knew his attacker. The shooting also resulted in damage to a nearby building, but no other injuries were reported.
Following an investigation, Champaign Police made an arrest in the case. On July 17, 2023, police conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as Daviet Henderson, who was wanted for murder related to the shooting. Henderson is currently being held in the Champaign County Correctional Center and is awaiting arraignment on charges of murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, use of a firearm by a felon, and defacing a firearm.
Despite the arrest, the police investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Authorities are still seeking additional information and have asked anyone with relevant details to contact Champaign Police or Crime Stoppers.
