On June 27, 2023, Samuel Lewis Larry Sprewer IV, a 16-year-old resident of Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot while walking down the street in the North Lawndale area on the West Side of Chicago. The incident occurred around 1:10 p.m. in the 4100 block of West 15th Street, where a Kia approached, and someone inside the vehicle opened fire, striking Samuel in the head and hand.
Samuel was pronounced dead at the scene by officials.
He was identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The shooting was particularly devastating for Samuel's family, as he was shot multiple times, with reports indicating he was hit 30 times. This tragic event occurred just three blocks from the home he shared with his father, sisters, and baby brother, making the location of the incident especially hard for the family to cope with.
As of the current date, no one has been taken into custody in connection with Samuel's murder. The case remains unsolved.
Following his death, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated by Marina Jefferson on behalf of Samuel's family to help cover funeral and burial expenses, as well as other household costs. The campaign aims to raise $10,000 to assist the family, particularly Samuel's father, who has struggled with depression and financial difficulties since the loss of his son.
Samuel's death has left a profound impact on his family and community, highlighting the ongoing issues of violence and tragedy that affect many in Chicago.
