On August 9, 2023, a tragic incident occurred at a residence in the 5800 block of Wild Plum Road in an unincorporated area of Crystal Lake, Illinois. Yuna Song, 49, was one of the four family members who lost their lives in this domestic incident.
The incident began early in the morning when authorities received a 911 call from a woman inside the home, reporting that a household member was shooting their relatives. Deputies from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at approximately 3:56 a.m. and found three female victims, including Yuna Song, already deceased. The other deceased women were identified as Chang Song, 73, and Lauren Smith-Song, 32.
In addition to the three deceased women, Jean Song, 44, the male aggressor and a family member, was found critically injured. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died. A fifth family member, an adult female who made the 911 call, was also seriously injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. She was later released.
The investigation, conducted by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the Major Investigation Assistance Team, revealed that Jean Song shot the four women, killing three of them, before turning the gun on himself. The causes of death were confirmed as murder for the three women and suicide for Jean Song. Authorities indicated that Jean Song was likely suffering from a mental health crisis at the time of the incident.
The community was shocked by the brutality of the attack, with neighbors describing the area as a "tight-knit community" and expressing their disbelief at the event. The sheriff’s office emphasized that there was no prior threat to the public and no previous police calls to the residence. The case has since been closed, with the sheriff’s office thanking the involved agencies for their assistance during the investigation.
