On August 3, 2017, Allania S. Yarber, a 31-year-old woman from Crystal Lake, Illinois, was tragically killed in a violent incident at her home. The events leading to her death involved a domestic dispute that escalated into a fatal confrontation. Allania Yarber, along with her 15-year-old sister, Anniyah Reynolds, were both shot multiple times by Allania's husband, Ryan C. Yarber. According to reports, Ryan Yarber called 911 around 8:02 p.m.
on the night of the incident, claiming that his wife had grabbed his throat and his sister-in-law had threatened him with a butcher knife. He stated that he shot them in self-defense.
When police arrived at the scene, they found Allania Yarber lying on her back with blood under her head, and Anniyah Reynolds slouched against a chair with a 9-inch knife lying within inches of her right hand. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Ryan Yarber was detained by police and a 9mm handgun was recovered from the driveway. The investigation revealed that there had been recent marital turmoil between Ryan and Allania Yarber, which had escalated into a heated argument shortly before the shooting.
Ryan Yarber was subsequently indicted on 25 counts, including first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated domestic battery, and endangering the life or health of a child. Initially pleading not guilty to all charges, Ryan Yarber later accepted a plea deal from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office. He pleaded guilty to reduced charges of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm. In February 2021, Ryan Yarber was sentenced to 65 years in prison for the deaths of his wife and her sister. Under state sentencing guidelines, he could be eligible for release after serving 31 years.
