On August 9, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in unincorporated Crystal Lake, Illinois, resulting in the deaths of four family members, including 32-year-old Lauren Smith-Song. Authorities responded to a 911 call at approximately 3:56 a.m. reporting that a household member had shot their relatives. Upon arrival at the residence on Wild Plum Road, deputies discovered three deceased women: Lauren Smith-Song, 32; Yuna Song, 49; and Chang Song, 73. A fourth female victim, who made the emergency call, was found seriously injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. A critically injured male, identified as 44-year-old Jean Song, was also found at the scene and later died at the hospital.
Investigations revealed that the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute that escalated into violence. Authorities determined that Jean Song was the aggressor, shooting the four women before turning the gun on himself. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office indicated that Song was likely experiencing a mental health crisis at the time. He possessed a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card and a concealed carry license.
The surviving female victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was hospitalized with serious injuries and has since been released. Neighbors expressed shock and sorrow over the tragedy, describing the community as a tight-knit and peaceful neighborhood. Authorities have confirmed that this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
