On August 19, 2023, a tragic shooting occurred in the unincorporated area of Glenview, Illinois, resulting in the deaths of two brothers, Carlos Guzman-Ezquivel, 19, and Jose Guzman-Ezquivel, 16. The incident took place at approximately 9:06 p.m. in the 14000 block of Michael Todd Terrace, near Milwaukee Avenue. Carlos Guzman-Ezquivel and his brother Jose were found with multiple gunshot wounds by Cook County Sheriff’s police responding to a report of shots fired.
Jose Guzman-Ezquivel was pronounced dead at the scene, while Carlos Guzman-Ezquivel was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he later succumbed to his injuries. A third victim, a 16-year-old male, suffered a graze wound to his back during the shooting.
The investigation, led by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, revealed that the shooting was an act of revenge following a physical altercation between Jose Guzman-Ezquivel and Carlos Miranda, 22, of Prospect Heights, in July. After the fight, a 15-year-old offender obtained a picture of Jose to identify him for retribution. On the night of the shooting, Miranda and the 15-year-old approached the Guzman-Ezquivel brothers outside their apartment complex and shot Jose at close range. As Carlos and the third victim attempted to flee, they were shot from behind.
The investigation involved analyzing cellphone data, surveillance footage, and other digital evidence, which led to the identification of additional suspects. Griselda Martinez, 42, of Itasca, acted as a lookout during the attack, and Sergio Patino-Jaime, 19, of Wheeling, helped dispose of the getaway car. All four individuals, including the juvenile offender, were charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.
Carlos Guzman-Ezquivel was a 2022 graduate of Glenbrook South High School and worked at UPS. He was known for his sense of humor and his caring nature towards his family and friends. He loved playing soccer and was remembered by his friends and teachers as a likable and creative person with much potential.
The community was deeply affected by the tragedy, with friends and family describing the brothers as protective, caring, and loving. A GoFundMe page was set up by their sister, Anette Guzman, to help cover medical, funeral, and burial expenses, which raised significant funds to support the family during this difficult time.
