On the evening of August 19, 2023, 16-year-old Jose Guzman and his 19-year-old brother, Carlos Guzman, were fatally shot outside their home in unincorporated Glenview, Illinois. The incident occurred around 9:06 p.m. in the 14000 block of Michael Todd Terrace, where Cook County Sheriff's officers discovered both brothers with multiple gunshot wounds. Jose was pronounced dead at the scene, while Carlos succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
A third victim, a 16-year-old boy, sustained a graze wound to his back.
Investigations revealed that in July 2023, Jose had been involved in a physical altercation with 22-year-old Carlos Miranda of Prospect Heights. Seeking retaliation, a 15-year-old associate of Miranda obtained a photograph of Jose to identify him. On August 19, Miranda and the juvenile confronted the Guzman brothers outside their apartment complex, shooting Jose multiple times at close range. As Carlos and the third victim attempted to flee, they were shot from behind. Multiple shell casings from different firearms were recovered at the scene, along with a cellphone belonging to the juvenile suspect.
Utilizing cellphone data, surveillance footage, and other digital evidence, detectives identified two additional individuals involved: 42-year-old Griselda Martinez of Itasca, who acted as a lookout during the attack, and 19-year-old Sergio Patino-Jaime of Wheeling, who assisted in disposing of the getaway vehicle. On December 19, 2023, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office charged all four suspects with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. The juvenile was detained at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, while Miranda was held in custody at the Cook County Jail. Martinez and Patino-Jaime were placed under electronic monitoring.
Jose Guzman was a student at Glenbrook South High School, preparing to start his junior year. Carlos, an alumnus of the same school, aspired to become a barber. Both brothers were passionate about soccer and were described by friends as dependable and kind-hearted individuals. In the wake of their deaths, a memorial was established outside their home, and a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support the Guzman family during this difficult time.
