Jun Zhang, 30, male, Asian left workaday routines behind him on a Friday evening and walked toward home in Palatine, where twilight had settled over the 800 block of South Plum Grove Road. Around 6 p.m. on November 17, 2023, first responders were dispatched for a report of a person down and bleeding; officers found Zhang on the front porch of a residence, unresponsive from an apparent gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
He had come to the United States from China, studied at Indiana University, and was working for Weichai America Corporation in nearby Rolling Meadows, with a recent engagement pointing his life toward a new chapter that would never arrive.
Detectives gathered video and, by January 2024, released images of a dark-colored SUV believed to be connected to the crime—described as a 2017–2020 Nissan Rogue or Murano—hoping the shape of a vehicle might lead them to the person behind the trigger. The police urged residents to study the footage and call in tips, a plea renewed one year later as the anniversary approached and investigators reiterated that they had pursued an exhaustive set of leads. Through it all, no arrests were announced, no suspect was publicly named, and the case remained open.
