On December 16, 2023, Maurice Hill, a 42-year-old resident of South Elgin, was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Barrington Lakes Apartments located in the 2200 block of Hassell Road in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Police, firefighters, and paramedics responded to the scene around 5:44 a.m. following reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, they found Hill lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the face.
Hill was transported by Hoffman Estates Fire Department paramedics to Ascension Saint Alexius Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:09 a.m.. The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the face.
The incident is under investigation by the Hoffman Estates police and the Major Case Assistance Team. Initially, there were no reports of anyone in custody, and police were seeking information from the public to aid in the investigation.
However, on January 11, 2024, an arrest was made in connection with the shooting. Joshua C. Hampton, a 24-year-old man from Chicago, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Hampton was charged with first-degree murder and also had a warrant for a parole violation. Additional charges are pending in the case.
Police have stated that the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community. The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings are ongoing, with Hampton due to appear in bond court following his arrest.
