On January 9, 2024, at approximately 10:02 p.m., Downers Grove Police officers responded to a 911 call reporting an unknown problem at a residence in the 6400 block of Fairview Avenue in Downers Grove, Illinois. Upon arrival, officers encountered several witnesses who reported a man with a gun inside the home and heard a gunshot.
The victims were identified as Dongwei Su, a 42-year-old man, and Yakun Sui, a 42-year-old woman, both residents of the home at 6314 Fairview Avenue. The preliminary investigation revealed that the couple had been involved in an argument and physical altercation. During this altercation, Dongwei Su reportedly retrieved a handgun and fatally shot his wife, Yakun Sui. When police entered the residence, they found both Su and Sui deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. It was also determined that Dongwei Su had died from a gunshot wound, although the exact circumstances of his death were not specified beyond it being part of the domestic incident.
The incident has been classified as a domestic-related shooting, and authorities have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Neighbors described the area as a tight-knit community and expressed shock and disturbance at the event, noting that the couple had only recently moved into the residence about two months prior.
