Trinity Boswell, an 18-year-old, was fatally shot in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago on June 9, 2024. The incident occurred early Sunday morning near the intersection of 72nd Street and Ada Street. According to her mother, Dirkeisha Acklin Johnson, Trinity was killed after an argument turned violent during a gathering. Trinity attempted to take cover by rushing into a parked car, but a bullet penetrated the window and struck her in the head, resulting in her death.
The shooting was part of a violent weekend in Chicago, which saw at least 44 people shot, with eight fatalities. In a separate incident just a block away from where Trinity was killed, a family friend, 22-year-old Kenziah Petis, was injured in an apparent drive-by shooting on Sunday night and remained in a coma at the hospital.
As of the current date, no arrests have been made in connection with Trinity's murder or the shooting of Kenziah Petis. The lack of arrests and the ongoing violence in the area have prompted community and political responses. Alderman David Moore (17th) has been camping out on 73rd Place between Ada Street and Racine Avenue to deter drug deals and other crimes, highlighting the persistent issue of violence in the area. Moore's efforts include calling for the continuation of Chicago's ShotSpotter contract and criticizing the city's current approach to policing.
The Englewood street where Trinity was killed has been associated with at least three recent homicides, and the community is pushing for a more effective strategy to address the ongoing violence.
