On July 10, 2024, 15-year-old Phillip Mitchell was fatally shot in Chicago's Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. Responding to a gunshot detection alert around 5:41 p.m. in the 7100 block of South King Drive, police found Mitchell near the street with a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to reports, Mitchell was returning from work and heading to get dinner when he encountered some old friends.
An altercation ensued, during which one individual allegedly pushed Mitchell to the ground and shot him six times, including once in the head. The incident was captured by a police surveillance camera, which showed two males approaching Mitchell, followed by one firing the shots before fleeing the scene.
A 17-year-old suspect, identified as Latoby Baines, was later arrested in connection with the shooting. Multiple witnesses and school employees identified Baines as the individual seen in the surveillance footage. He was charged as an adult with first-degree murder and was ordered detained without the option of electronic monitoring or home confinement, as the judge deemed him a significant risk to the community.
In the wake of this tragedy, Mitchell's mother, Racque Bussell, organized a fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses. She described her son as excited about starting his sophomore year in high school and noted his involvement with the Target Area Non-Profit organization for the past three years. The community mourned the loss of a young life cut short by senseless violence.
