In the early morning hours of March 14, 2023, 11-year-old Asijah Love Jones was asleep in her bed in Griffin, Georgia, when a stray bullet pierced through her bedroom window, tragically ending her life. The young girl, who was just a month away from her 12th birthday, was lying next to her sister at the time of the incident. The gunfire was the result of a gang-related dispute that had no connection to Asijah or her family.
The investigation into the senseless killing quickly identified Kionta Parks, a known gang member, as the primary suspect. It was determined that Parks had been targeting a rival gang member when he fired multiple shots at a vehicle in the Spalding Heights apartment complex. One of those bullets missed its intended target and entered Asijah's nearby apartment, striking her. Authorities launched a manhunt for Parks, who remained a fugitive for a month before being apprehended on April 12, 2023. A woman named Natasha Beckham was also arrested and charged with hindering his apprehension.
Kionta Parks was charged with a litany of offenses, including felony murder, aggravated assault, cruelty to children, and violation of the Georgia Criminal Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. In August 2025, Parks pleaded guilty to all charges against him. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison plus five years for his role in the death of Asijah Love Jones. The case highlighted the devastating and far-reaching consequences of gang violence on innocent members of the community.
