In the early morning hours of April 20, 2023, Korri Jackson, a 26-year-old Black man and U.S. Army veteran, was killed in what appeared to be a random act of violence in Atlanta, Georgia. Jackson had been working two jobs to realize his dreams and was taking a nap in his work van between shifts when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred at the One Riverside West townhouse community on Main Street in northwest Atlanta.
The investigation into Jackson's death soon revealed a connection
to another shooting that happened just ten minutes earlier and about a mile away. At the Flipper Temple Apartments on Abner Terrace, 19-year-old Jalen Curtis was found with gunshot wounds and later died at a hospital. Police determined that the two homicides were linked and began to piece together the events of that tragic morning.
According to investigators, the series of events began when three men, identified as Roderiko Russell, Kmauri Burnett, and another individual named Anderson, set out to break into and steal vehicles. They allegedly targeted Jackson's work van. The van's alarm woke Jackson, and when he went to close a door that had been opened, he was shot. In a tragic turn of events, Jalen Curtis, who was with the alleged perpetrators, was also shot during the incident. His companions then drove him to the nearby apartment complex, where they left him after seeking help from residents.
In the months that followed, authorities made progress in their investigation. In June 2023, Anderson was arrested during a traffic stop and charged with murder, felony murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, entering an auto, and tampering with evidence. Investigators used bodycam footage from a prior arrest and cellphone data to place him at the scene of both shootings. In December 2025, the U.S. Marshals apprehended 20-year-old Kmauri Burnett in Duluth, Minnesota. He was extradited to Atlanta to face the same charges as Anderson. The third suspect, Rodreiko Russell, remains at large and is considered one of the Atlanta Police Department's Most Wanted fugitives.
