On August 18, 2023, at approximately 10:50 p.m., the City of Jefferson, Georgia Police Department responded to a shooting incident near the intersection of Business Hwy 129 and Storey Lane in Jefferson. Upon arrival, officers found Mateo Gomez Lucas, a 34-year-old resident of Jefferson, unconscious due to his injuries. Gomez was immediately transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia, where he succumbed to his injuries and died.
