Born on June 7, 1991, in Gainesville, Georgia, Powers was a graduate of North Hall High School and was known to be of the Christian faith.

It was there that Phillip was fatally shot by his 46-year-old father, Thomas Phillip Powers. Following the shooting of his son, Thomas Powers then took his own life. The incident was classified by authorities as a murder-suicide.
