In the West End neighborhood of Atlanta, a dispute that began over a simple fast-food order tragically escalated, ending the life of 30-year-old Tamanika “ne-ne” Woods. The Black / African American mother of four was shot and killed inside a McDonald’s on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard on the afternoon of December 27, 2023.
The incident began when 19-year-old T'Niya Evans and her sisters confronted a McDonald's employee about missing food from their order.
Woods, who was a friend of the employee, came to her defense. The argument intensified, leading to a physical altercation between Woods and one of Evans' sisters. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Evans then pulling a gun from her waistband and firing a single shot, striking Woods.
Woods was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest. A witness at the scene was able to detain Evans until police arrived. Evans was arrested and subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and theft by receiving stolen property. She is being held without bond in the Fulton County Jail.
The death of Tamanika Woods, described by her father as a senseless act resulting from a trivial argument, sent ripples of grief through her community. Hundreds gathered in southwest Atlanta to honor her memory, releasing blue and silver balloons and sharing fond remembrances of a woman described as caring, loving, and someone who made everyone feel like they had known her for a lifetime. Her family has committed to raising her four children, who range in age from toddlers to teenagers. Funeral services for Woods were held on January 5, 2024, at East Lake United Methodist Church.
