A 24-year-old man, Gregory Campbell, lost his life in a shooting that unfolded at a Hephzibah, Georgia, apartment complex. The incident, which led to his death, occurred on April 21, 2024, at the Benson Apartment complex located on Williamsburg Drive. When Richmond County deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Campbell suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was promptly transported to Wellstar MCG for medical attention but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Following an investigation into the fatal shooting, law enforcement officials identified a suspect. Warrants were issued for the arrest of 38-year-old Bennelle Evans of Augusta. For weeks, Evans remained at large, prompting a search that extended beyond the immediate area.
On May 3, 2024, the search for the suspect came to an end when Bennelle Evans was located and apprehended in McDuffie County. The arrest was made with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal's Southeastern Task Force and the Georgia State Patrol. Evans now faces a series of serious charges in connection with the death of Gregory Campbell, including murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
