In a quiet Marietta, Georgia neighborhood on the evening of Sunday, April 28, 2024, a heated argument escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 48-year-old Tavoris Danta Johnson. A Black/African American male, Johnson was found suffering from several gunshot wounds in the 400 block of Lorene Drive. First responders arrived at the scene just after 7:30 p.m.
and transported him to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Johnson's death quickly led authorities to a suspect, 40-year-old Bobby Lorenzo Pegues Jr. of Smyrna. Less than 24 hours after the shooting, Pegues was apprehended in the 2200 block of Atlanta Road. According to arrest warrants, two witnesses observed the altercation that preceded the deadly gunfire. Pegues was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Following his arrest, Bobby Pegues Jr. was held without bond at the Cobb County Jail. His criminal history included prior arrests in DeKalb and Fulton counties on charges such as criminal attempt, aggravated assault, and gun possession. In September 2025, a Cobb County jury found Pegues guilty on multiple charges, including the murder of Tavoris Johnson and trafficking cocaine. He is currently awaiting sentencing and is expected to receive a sentence of life without parole.
