In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Fitzgerald, Georgia, a night that should have been filled with the joy and laughter of a high school prom ended in unimaginable tragedy. Fifteen-year-old Chyell Paulk, a female, was fatally shot on April 28, 2024, at an after-prom party. Paulk, an honor roll student and cheerleader at Irwin County High School, was remembered for her loving spirit and a smile that could light up a room.
The violence erupted at approximately 1:10 a.m.
in the 300 block of East Pine Street, where a gathering of young people had convened following their prom. An altercation broke out, and as Paulk and her friends attempted to leave, gunfire rang out. She was struck in her right side and rushed to a local hospital, but her injuries proved to be fatal. Three other individuals, a 19-year-old and two other minors, were also wounded in the shooting.
In the wake of the shooting, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Fitzgerald Police Department with the investigation. Their efforts quickly led to the arrest of 17-year-old Channen Brown. Brown has been charged with one count of felony murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Although he is a minor, under Georgia law, he may be tried as an adult for such serious offenses. While one arrest has been made, law enforcement officials have indicated that their investigation remains active and that further arrests are a possibility as they continue to seek at least one other individual believed to have been involved in the shooting.
