On a Saturday in early May of 2024, the life of Escondarious Lamontay Pinkney, a 23-year-old Black/African American man, was tragically cut short in his hometown of Blakely, Georgia. The young man, a resident of Dothan, Alabama, but with deep roots in Blakely, was found in an open lot situated between North Main Street and North Avenue, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The Blakely Police Department responded swiftly to reports of gunfire and a person in need of immediate medical help.
Despite the prompt arrival of emergency services and being rushed to Early Memorial Hospital, Pinkney succumbed to his injuries. The news of his death sent ripples through the community that knew him as a vibrant young man. An investigation into the shooting was immediately launched, involving a coordinated effort from several law enforcement agencies, including the Early County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Georgia State Patrol.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of a suspect. In the early hours of the following morning, at approximately 2:00 a.m., 32-year-old Antwain Thornton of Blakely was apprehended in connection with the fatal shooting. Thornton was subsequently charged with murder and booked into the Early County Jail. Authorities indicated at the time of his arrest that further charges related to assault and weapons violations were anticipated as the investigation continued to unfold. The case remains an active investigation, with law enforcement encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward.
