On the evening of April 22, 2015, 27-year-old African American male Paul Gillins was fatally shot while seated in his vehicle at a McDonald's parking lot on Cassat Avenue in Jacksonville, Florida. Two other African American male passengers, both 23 years old, sustained injuries during the attack. The assailant fled the scene on foot, leaving behind a community in shock and a crime scene teeming with unanswered questions.
Investigations revealed that Paul Gillins was a known member of the Cutthroat Committee gang, while his passengers were affiliated with the Doo Doo Creek gang. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office identified these gangs, along with the PYC as primary groups involved in a recent surge of violence in Northwest Jacksonville. The area has been marked by territorial disputes and a history of retaliatory violence.
The day following Gillins' murder, the cycle of vengeance continued. On April 23, 2015, a drive-by shooting at the intersection of Tyler and Windle Streets in the New Town area claimed the lives of 25-year-old African American female Sharika Edwards and 32-year-old African American female Shelmika Felton. Edwards, identified as a member of the PYC gang, was known to frequent the corner for drug-related activities. Felton, tragically, was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. JSO officials connected this incident directly to Gillins' murder, labeling it a retaliatory act in the ongoing gang feud.
In response to these events, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office intensified efforts to combat gang violence by increasing patrols targeting known gang members, particularly in Northwest Jacksonville. Despite these measures, the lack of cooperation from surviving victims has posed challenges to the investigations, as individuals often choose to handle matters internally, perpetuating the cycle of violence.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of 27-year-old African American male Paul Gillins. The case remains open, with law enforcement urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in bringing those responsible to justice.
