In the first minutes after midnight on October 19, 1985, Douglas Cleaves was at his Sand Lake duplex in Anchorage with his sister and two friends when heavy knocks sounded at the door. A masked figure in a balaclava, combat gloves, and a tan trench coat forced the door, stepped inside with what witnesses took to be a bolt-action hunting rifle, and went straight for Cleaves, who had been recovering from a devastating workplace accident that summer.
