In the afternoon hours of a Thursday in Columbus, Georgia, 15-year-old Earkavion Lee, a male student at Kendrick High School, stepped off his school bus, a routine act that marked the end of his school day. Tragically, moments later, the sound of gunfire shattered the ordinary scene. Earkavion was shot in the 2300 block of Watkins Drive, just a short distance from the safety of his home.
First responders rushed to the scene, and the teenager was quickly transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional hospital. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. The Muscogee County School District expressed its profound grief over the 'senseless gun violence' that claimed the life of one of its students, extending condolences to his family, friends, and the school community. This tragedy was compounded by the fact that Earkavion's older brother, 18-year-old Earkus Porter, had also been shot and killed in Columbus just months earlier.
The investigation into Earkavion Lee's death moved swiftly, and on the same day as the shooting, police apprehended the first suspect. Roannil Laron Clanton, 20, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and six counts of aggravated assault. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the motive behind the shooting or how they initially identified Clanton as a suspect. In his first court appearance, Clanton pleaded not guilty.
Within days, the collaborative efforts of local and federal law enforcement agencies, including the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office, the Columbus Police Department, the FBI, and the Coweta County Sheriff's Office, led to the apprehension of three additional suspects. On September 24, 2024, authorities arrested 19-year-old Demetrius Miles, 17-year-old Gregory Nelson, and 17-year-old Marquis Roberts in connection with Earkavion's murder. These three individuals faced charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Later reports indicated that Nelson, Roberts, and Miles were also charged with six counts of aggravated assault and two counts of second-degree criminal damage to property. All four suspects are being held in the Muscogee County Jail as the investigation into the shooting continues.
