In the quiet community of Chickamauga, Georgia, the life of 25-year-old Dakota Austin Bottomlee was cut short on the night of October 31, 2024. Just after midnight, on what was technically the early morning of November 1st, Walker County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call about a cardiac arrest at a residence on Johnson Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene; Bottomlee was found deceased in the carport of the home, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the homicide was swiftly launched, with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation joining forces with the Walker County Sheriff's Office. Their collaborative efforts began to unravel a plot that was initially intended to be an armed robbery. Investigators found evidence of a struggle inside the residence, including a shattered glass coffee table and shell casings from two different firearms, as well as a toy gun. A crucial break in the case came from tipsters who reported that a young woman, Kayla Michelle McClure, had been boasting about her involvement in the crime.
This information led investigators to focus on four individuals. On November 6, a search warrant was executed at a home in Ringgold, which led to arrest warrants being issued for 21-year-old Kayla Michelle McClure and 21-year-old James Logan Darty. Two days later, warrants were also issued for 18-year-old Marcuse Allen Chambers and 23-year-old Brayden Niri Whatley. McClure, Darty, and Chambers were taken into custody, while Whatley remained at large for a period before being apprehended. The investigation was further aided by the discovery of incriminating messages and videos on the suspects' social media accounts, which documented their planning and attempts to cover up the crime. A firearm recovered from Chambers' residence was forensically matched to shell casings found at the scene. McClure later admitted to using an Airsoft pistol during the incident.
Following a six-day trial, a Walker County jury convicted all four individuals on December 9, 2025. Marcus Allen Chambers, James Logan Darty, Kayla Michelle McClure, and Brayden Niri Whatley were found guilty of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, and aggravated assault. The prosecution successfully argued the case under Georgia's “Party to a Crime” law, which holds all participants in a felony responsible for the actions of their accomplices. On December 19, 2025, each of the four defendants was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
