Heather Nicole Sheppard, a 43-year-old resident of Jacksonville, Florida, was reported missing by her family on June 29, 2023. Her disappearance was marked by a sudden break in the daily contact she maintained with her family, including her ex-husband and children, which raised immediate concerns.
Sheppard's body was discovered on July 5, 2023, on the front porch of her home on Colonial Avenue.
The body was found in an advanced state of decomposition, concealed under a blue tarp and covered with ice packs. An autopsy later revealed that Sheppard had been shot multiple times, leading to her death.
The investigation into Sheppard's death quickly identified her partner, Shannon McCarthy, as a suspect. McCarthy, also 43 years old, had a history of domestic disputes with Sheppard. McCarthy was arrested on Tuesday following the discovery of Sheppard's body and was charged with second-degree murder and making a written threat to kill. The arrest report indicated that McCarthy had gone to great lengths to cover up the crime.

Her oldest daughter, Samantha McGehee, described her mother as someone who always made sure to tell people she loved them and was deeply loved by everyone. Sheppard left behind three children and had hopes of becoming a grandparent one day. Her daughter plans to attend all the hearings related to McCarthy's trial to ensure justice is served for her mother's tragic death.
