On July 19, 2023, Jonteira Morton, a 33-year-old Black woman, was fatally shot in Boynton Beach, Florida. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. at a residence on Northwest 13th Avenue, where she and a male companion, both experiencing homelessness, were staying. The homeowners had offered them shelter, with the man sleeping on the couch and Jonteira Morton residing in a tent in the backyard.
The couple reported hearing gunshots and subsequently discovered the male victim wounded inside the home and Jonteira Morton deceased outside.
Following an investigation, authorities arrested 28-year-old Kaeshawn Daughtry on August 14, 2023. He was charged with first-degree murder for the death of Jonteira Morton and attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of the male victim. Daughtry was apprehended by U.S. Marshals and local law enforcement.
The motive behind the shooting has not been publicly disclosed, and the investigation remains ongoing. The tragic event underscores the vulnerabilities faced by individuals experiencing homelessness and the broader issues of gun violence within the community.
