Aiden Hutchins, a 10-year-old boy, was supposed to start his fifth grade at Spruce Mountain Elementary School in Jay, Maine, on August 30, 2023. However, he never made it back to Maine from Florida, where he had been living with his mother, Brandy Hutchins, over the summer. A court order had been issued for Brandy to deliver Aiden to his father, Nick Hutchins, in Maine by August 21, as part of a primary residential custody agreement. Despite this, Brandy failed to comply with the court order.
Nick Hutchins, along with his father Bruce and a friend, made a 24-hour trip to Lake Wales, Florida, to pick up Aiden. When Brandy did not show up at the agreed time, Nick contacted the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The deputies were unable to locate Aiden, prompting Nick to post on social media for help. After 178 shares, a tip led the authorities to a mobile home in Lake Wales.
On Sunday, August 27, 2023, around 12:30 p.m., officers from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office went to the mobile home and discovered the bodies of Aiden and his 19-year-old half-sister. Brandy Hutchins was found nearby with a self-inflicted fatal gunshot wound. According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, Brandy had murdered her children before taking her own life, an act described as a horrific set of circumstances driven by her refusal to comply with the court order to hand over custody of Aiden to his father.
The custody battle between Nick and Brandy had been ongoing since 2016, with Nick frequently seeking court intervention to enforce the parental time-sharing agreement. Brandy had a history of denying Nick visitation and failing to adhere to the agreed-upon custody arrangements. Nick expressed his belief that the court system had failed him and his son, highlighting the need for changes in the court and Amber Alert systems to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Aiden Hutchins will be buried in Maine, and his father is determined to honor his memory by advocating for changes in the judicial system to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again. A GoFundMe account was set up by a friend to support the family, raising over $4,300 as of the initial reports.
