A dispute between neighbors at a North Miami, Florida, apartment complex ended in tragedy on November 13, 2023, claiming the lives of Hector Rivera, a 50-year-old Hispanic man, and his two adult sons, Frank and Jeremy Rivera. In a fundraiser organized for the family, a relative wrote, "My beloved father and two brothers were recently taken away suddenly." Family members rushed to the scene after hearing about the shooting on the news.
"Three people were shot, one's my uncle, two are my cousins," his niece, Kassandra Rivera, told reporters. "A simple fight and now three persons dead. For what?"
The incident began that afternoon with a physical altercation between Hector Rivera and his neighbor, Pierce Nelson Hoempler, on the front lawn of their apartment complex on Northeast 5th Avenue. According to police reports, the fight escalated until both men were on the ground, with Hoempler pinning Rivera down. When Rivera’s sons, Jeremy and Frank, ran over to help their father, Hoempler pulled a semi-automatic pistol from his waistband and shot all three men. The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office later stated that Frank’s two young sons, ages 8 and 10, witnessed the shooting.
Hector sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, along with his son Jeremy. Frank Rivera was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he later died from his injuries. Police confirmed that none of the three victims were armed at the time of the shooting.
North Miami Police detained Hoempler at the scene, where multiple witnesses identified him as the shooter. Body camera footage captured Hoempler telling officers he acted in self-defense. "I tried to avoid it as much as I could, man. Then his sons showed up," Hoempler said. "Maintenance kids pulled up and started rushing me... I had no choice." He also said he had told Hector to "chill, don't do this, your grandkids are right there." Hoempler was arrested and taken to the police station, where he refused to give a formal statement.
Hoempler was initially charged with three counts of second-degree murder and held without bond. At trial, he continued to claim self-defense. Prosecutors successfully argued against his claim, and in September 2026, a jury convicted Pierce Nelson Hoempler of one count of first-degree murder for the death of Hector Rivera and two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Jeremy and Frank Rivera.
Following the verdict, Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle issued a statement, saying, "The senseless murder of Hector Rivera and his two sons, Jeremy and Frank, was made even more tragic as they were gunned down in front of Frank's 8-year-old and 10-year-old sons who lost their father, uncle, and grandfather all at once." As of September 2026, Hoempler was awaiting sentencing.
