Griffin Chase Smith, a 19-year-old White man from Ocala, Florida, was remembered by his family as a kind-hearted person who was loved by many. His mother, Amy Smith, said he was the "light of my world" and that his "smile could brighten anyone's day." The father of Griffin's girlfriend described him as a quiet and respectful young man. He had just celebrated his 19th birthday in November 2023, less than three weeks before his life was taken.
On the afternoon of Saturday, December 2,
2023, Griffin arranged via text messages to meet someone to purchase a firearm. The meeting took place near a Dollar General store on Marion Oaks Boulevard. Investigators later learned that the seller, a teenager, had planned to rob Griffin by claiming a digital payment had not been received. When Griffin tried to drive away from the meeting in his white 2020 Dodge Ram pickup truck, the teen opened fire, shooting him multiple times.
Though severely wounded, Griffin managed to drive about a mile from the scene. He came to a stop in a wooded area behind the Marion Oaks Community Center. Around 3:15 p.m., Marion County Sheriff's deputies responded to the location for what was reported as a possible vehicle accident. They found Griffin inside his truck with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Marion County Sheriff’s Office detectives began a homicide investigation. By examining text messages and cellphone data, and interviewing witnesses, they identified a suspect. The investigation revealed that the suspect had been detained in another county days after the shooting in a stolen vehicle that had been used to travel to the meeting with Griffin. In December 2024, a year after the shooting, authorities arrested Kydris Jackson, who was 13 at the time of the crime. Jackson, then 14, was already in juvenile detention on an unrelated matter.
Kydris Jackson was charged with second-degree murder for the death of Griffin Smith. In March 2026, the case went to trial, and Jackson was convicted of second-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 50 years in prison.
