On March 14, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at AdventHealth Sebring hospital in Sebring, Florida, resulting in the deaths of Joe E. Landon, 67, and his son, Noah Ryan Presley Landon, 23.
Noah, who was described as having special needs and being non-verbal and autistic, was taken to the hospital by his father due to a confrontation and because he was being combative. The hospital staff placed Noah in a mental health room in the emergency room, where he was restrained to a bed.
Before the incident, Joe Landon posted a photo of his son on Facebook, showing Noah strapped to a gurney. The post included the message "At er with Noah Ryan prayers" along with praying hands, sorrowful face, and crying face emojis.
According to the authorities, Joe Landon then pulled out a handgun and fired two shots into a wall in an apparent attempt to clear the room of other people. He subsequently shot his son, who was lying on the bed, and then turned the gun on himself. Both men died at the scene, with no other injuries reported.
The incident led to a lockdown at the hospital, and ambulances were diverted to another facility. The hospital later released a statement reassuring that no team members were harmed and offering support to the staff affected by the tragedy.
Sheriff Paul Blackman of the Highlands County Sheriff's Office highlighted the difficulties Joe Landon was facing in caring for his son and his own medical challenges, suggesting that these struggles may have contributed to the tragic outcome. Blackman also emphasized the importance of seeking help from available resources, such as calling 988 or the sheriff’s office, for those facing similar challenges.
