Dequante Rashad Yarde, a 19-year-old from Sebring, Florida, tragically lost his life on October 7, 2016. The incident occurred outside a venue known as "The Spot" on Lemon Avenue in Sebring. Around 8:30 PM, a shooting took place, resulting in Yarde's death and serious injuries to another individual, 24-year-old Michael Bernard McCune. The Highlands County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and confirmed Yarde's death shortly after the incident.
The investigation into Yarde's death
led to the identification and arrest of two suspects. Desmond Edwards and Ricky Lenford Hugh Nelson were apprehended in connection with the shooting. The authorities pursued the suspects after receiving another call about a drive-by shooting on Douglas Avenue, which was linked to the same vehicle involved in the initial incident. During the pursuit, one of the suspects, Jaquar Derraile Tyheem Mathis, sustained injuries and later died. The other suspects were eventually located and taken into custody, with one found hiding in an apartment closet.
The case was thoroughly investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Tenth Judicial Circuit Office of the State's Attorney. The investigation cleared the deputies involved in the pursuit and subsequent shooting of the suspects. Detective Sgt. Jamie Davidson and FDLE Special Agent John King reached out to the public for additional information to aid in the investigation, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in solving such cases.
