On April 13, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at a Chevron gas station located at 1701 NW 54 St. in Liberty City, Miami. Shamun Shaukat, a 42-year-old employee of the gas station, was fatally shot along with another employee, 51-year-old Shahbaz Hussain. The shooting also left a third individual, 57-year-old Elijah Shorter, critically injured.
The incident began when Shaukat suspected a 23-year-old man from Ohio, Jason Dyer-Mitchell, of shoplifting.
Shaukat confronted Dyer-Mitchell, leading to a confrontation that escalated when Dyer-Mitchell drew a gun and opened fire on the three men. The shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m., and by the time first responders arrived, they found two victims inside the store and one outside.
Dyer-Mitchell fled the scene after the shooting, but he was later identified through a hoodie he was wearing. The hoodie, which had "POWER" in white font, was linked to the Powerhouse Gym Miami, where Dyer-Mitchell was a member. This information led detectives to his address at a nearby apartment building across the street from the gas station.
Miami police officers arrested Dyer-Mitchell about five hours after the fatal shooting at his apartment in the Liberty Village condominium building. The arrest was part of a SWAT operation that unfolded around 5:30 a.m.
The community was deeply affected by the loss of Shaukat and Hussain, who were known for their kindness and generosity. Customers of the gas station remembered them fondly, noting that they often helped people in need, including providing food and coffee to those who could not afford it.
