On April 13, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at a Chevron gas station located at Northwest 17th Avenue and 54th Street in Miami, Florida. The event began with a verbal altercation inside the gas station involving two employees, Shahbaz Hussain, 51, and Shamun Shaukat, 42, who were also the owners of the business. The altercation escalated when a suspect pulled out a firearm and opened fire on the employees and a customer.
Shahbaz Hussain and Shamun Shaukat were pronounced dead at the scene. The customer, identified as 57-year-old Elijah Shorter, was critically injured and rushed to Ryder Trauma Center. The suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Jason Craig Dyer-Mitchell, fled the scene on foot after the shooting.
Following the incident, the Miami Police and Fire Rescue units responded quickly, setting up two perimeters and deploying SWAT teams to search for the shooter. The search lasted for several hours, with residents describing a significant police presence in the area. Eventually, Dyer-Mitchell was apprehended by Miami Police's tactical squad when they entered the building where he rented an apartment, located across the street from the Chevron station.
Surveillance video from inside the Chevron station played a crucial role in identifying Dyer-Mitchell. The video showed the suspect engaging in an exchange with the workers, who suspected him of shoplifting, before he pulled out a gun and started firing. Dyer-Mitchell was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder. In court, a judge ordered him to be held without bond.
