Tommie Lamore Johnson III, a Black man whose age was not publicly released, was fatally shot during the afternoon of May 14, 2024, in South Miami-Dade. At approximately 1:40 p.m., Johnson was walking along a sidewalk near Southwest 220th Street and Southwest 115th Avenue when another person approached him from behind. The assailant opened fire, striking Johnson multiple times before leaving the area.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded to the scene and transported Johnson for emergency medical treatment. Initial news reports differed on whether he was taken to Jackson South Medical Center or Jackson Memorial Hospital, but authorities confirmed that he died from his gunshot wounds despite efforts to save him. The shooting unfolded in daylight in a residential area, leaving detectives to reconstruct what had happened and determine why Johnson had been targeted.

Investigators quickly identified 16-year-old Marquies McBride, whose name was also reported in early coverage as Marquie Mcbride, as the suspected shooter. Police located McBride at his home on May 15, one day after Johnson was killed, and brought him to the Miami-Dade Police Department's Homicide Bureau for questioning. Much of the publicly released arrest report was redacted because McBride was initially handled as a juvenile, and authorities did not publicly disclose what evidence connected him to the shooting.

By early June 2024, prosecutors had transferred McBride into the adult criminal justice system. He was moved to the Metro West Detention Center and charged as an adult with one count of second-degree murder. Jail records indicated that he was being held without bond. He also faced a separate grand-theft-of-a-vehicle charge stemming from an earlier case in which police said he had been found driving a stolen 2021 Honda CR-V and fled from the vehicle after failing to stop for officers.

Police did not release a motive for Johnson's killing, and the limited arrest documents provided no public explanation of whether Johnson and McBride knew one another or what may have preceded the attack. No additional suspects were publicly identified in connection with the homicide. Publicly available reporting confirms the arrest and adult murder charge, but it does not establish that McBride has been convicted, sentenced, or brought to a completed trial.
