In the afternoon hours of November 7, 2025, a seemingly routine traffic accident in the Kendall area of Southwest Miami-Dade would tragically escalate, ending the life of 27-year-old Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Deputy Devin Jaramillo. A man with a deep-rooted connection to law enforcement, Jaramillo was following in the footsteps of his father, a retired Miami-Dade police detective.
His dedication to public service was evident through his nearly four years with the Coral Gables Police Department before joining the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, where he had served for almost two years.
Responding to the scene of a minor crash, Deputy Jaramillo encountered 21-year-old Steven David Rustrian. Reports indicate that Rustrian had been involved in the accident and had switched seats with his passenger before the deputy's arrival. When Jaramillo confronted Rustrian, an argument quickly erupted, leading to a physical altercation. During the struggle, Rustrian managed to gain control of Jaramillo's service weapon and fired multiple times, fatally wounding the deputy. Good Samaritans at the scene called 911, and a passing federal agent was the first to render aid, performing CPR on the critically injured deputy. Jaramillo was rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, Steven David Rustrian, retreated to his vehicle after the shooting and took his own life with the deputy's gun. Investigators have found no prior connection between Jaramillo and Rustrian. A second individual who was with Rustrian was initially detained for questioning but was later released with no charges filed. Friends of Rustrian later revealed that he had been struggling with personal issues in the time leading up to the incident. The community mourned the loss of Deputy Jaramillo, who was remembered as a "homegrown hero" and a man who "could have done anything with his professional career, but he chose public service." Memorial services drew thousands of mourners, including law enforcement officers from various agencies, to honor the life and sacrifice of the fallen deputy.
