Eugenia "Gina" Craig-Webb, a 61-year-old Black woman remembered by a friend as "an angel," was killed in a double homicide on June 1, 2024. That afternoon, she and a man she was dating, Barry Singleton, 60, of Memphis, Tennessee, were shot in the hallway outside her apartment at the Trio at Encore complex in Tampa, Florida. Police responded to a 911 call and found both victims deceased on the fourth floor.
The investigation quickly focused on Eugenia’s ex-husband, Robert Lee
Craig-Webb, 65. The couple had been married for about 30 years before divorcing in 2021. Although Robert had moved out of the apartment complex in August 2023, tensions remained, and Eugenia had blocked his phone number. According to a court motion, Robert’s anger escalated on May 27, 2024, when his daughter told him that Eugenia was dating Singleton. He later told investigators he was upset about statements the pair had allegedly made, claiming Singleton was spreading a rumor that he had been dishonorably discharged from the military.
On the day of the shooting, Robert Craig-Webb armed himself with a .45-caliber pistol and traveled to the apartment building. He saw Eugenia leaving with their daughter, her husband, and their children earlier in the day but did not confront them. Instead, he waited outside Eugenia’s apartment. A doorbell camera recorded Eugenia and Singleton leaving with drinks in their hands. As they walked down the hall, Robert approached from behind, called out to get their attention, and then shot Singleton. After Singleton fell, Robert shot Eugenia multiple times.
Investigators found 11 spent .45-caliber shell casings at the scene. Shortly after the shooting, Robert called his sister and confessed to what he had done. His sister then relayed the information to his daughter. Robert Craig-Webb turned himself in to the Tampa Police Department soon after. According to his son, Robert had previously threatened to kill Eugenia and had a prior arrest for domestic violence in Tennessee.
Robert Lee Craig-Webb was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of armed burglary. In a motion for pretrial detention, prosecutors stated that he admitted to the crime. As of June 2024, his case was moving through the court system.
