Andre Mitchell, a 24-year-old Black man known to friends and family by nicknames like "Boog" and "5 Mitch," was remembered as a real brother who always kept a smile on everyone's face.
On the evening of July 1, 2024, Mitchell was fatally shot in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. Just before 7 p.m., Mitchell and another man, 24-year-old Alfred Vickers II, were inside a vehicle near NW 51st Street and 2nd Avenue when a violent shootout erupted.
Occupants of multiple vehicles exchanged fire, with police reporting that over 100 shots were fired. One of the weapons used was said to be an automatic firearm modified to operate like a machine gun.
Both Mitchell and Vickers were struck by the gunfire and rushed by first responders to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Doctors were unable to save Mitchell, who succumbed to his injuries. Vickers was listed in critical condition but ultimately survived.
After a months-long investigation, Miami police determined the shooting was gang-related, stemming from a conflict between the “Slice Gang” and the rival “Boss Life” gang. Authorities subsequently arrested six individuals, charging each with second-degree murder. The suspects were identified as Jamauri James Glover, 23; Sheldred Johnson, 19; Symarri Williams, 19; Manuel Orlando Rivera, 21; Ja’twan Phillips, 21; and an unnamed 17-year-old male. According to detectives, Phillips is a member of the “Slice Gang,” while the other suspects belong to the “Boss Life” gang.
The case is now proceeding toward trial. All six suspects have appeared in court before Miami-Dade Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez. During a hearing, the judge expressed her frustration with both the prosecution and the defense for delays in the legal proceedings, noting that the state had only completed one of 17 depositions. She stated her intention to bring the case to trial within the next 10 months.
