On September 30, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at the Sun Vista Gardens condominium complex near the 5600 block of Rock Island Road in Tamarac, Florida. Six-year-old Odaine Hall accidentally shot himself with an unsecured firearm and was found by emergency responders with a gunshot wound. Despite their efforts, Odaine was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident happened around 3:30 p.m.
when Odaine, who was being watched by his uncle, Carika Hall, somehow obtained the unsecured gun and accidentally shot himself. The Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) conducted a preliminary investigation, which revealed that the gun was not properly secured, allowing Odaine to access it.
The BSO emphasized the importance of gun safety, urging gun owners to store their firearms unloaded and in locked containers inaccessible to minors. This incident has left the community in shock and mourning, with BSO spokesperson Gerdy St. Louis expressing the devastating impact on the family, stating that they are going through an "unspeakable" loss.
Following the investigation, Carika Hall, the 25-year-old uncle of Odaine, was arrested on November 7, 2024, by the BSO's Violent Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (V.I.P.E.R.) Unit. He was charged with culpable negligence and child neglect in connection with Odaine's death. Carika Hall was booked into jail and later appeared in court, where he was granted a $10,000 bond with the condition that he could not possess guns or ammunition.
The family has requested privacy as they grieve the loss of Odaine, and the community continues to grapple with the tragic consequences of the unsecured firearm. The BSO has reiterated the critical need for proper gun safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
