Deputy Sheriff Brian Keith Tephford, aged 34, tragically lost his life on November 11, 2006, in Tamarac, Florida. Tephford was performing extra duty at the Versailles Gardens condominium complex when he conducted a vehicle stop on two suspicious vehicles around 11:00 PM. During this stop, he called for backup, and Deputy Corey Carbocci arrived to assist. As Tephford was running the suspects' information on his computer, one of the three men approached his patrol car and opened fire, striking both deputies. Tephford was critically injured and succumbed to his wounds an hour later at Broward General Medical Center. Deputy Carbocci sustained non-life-threatening injuries and survived the attack.
The investigation into Deputy Tephford's murder led to the swift arrest of three suspects: Eloyn Ingraham, Bernard Forbes, and Andre Delancy. These individuals were charged with the murder of Deputy Tephford and the attempted murder of Deputy Carbocci. The case proceeded through the legal system, and on July 20, 2016, all three men were convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. They were each sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The trial revealed that Ingraham had called Forbes and Delancy to ambush the deputies after he was pulled over. During the sentencing hearing, Deputy Carbocci testified about the harrowing experience, describing how he saw the muzzle flashes and felt the bullets hit him. The defense attorneys argued that Carbocci could not definitively place the men at the scene, but the jury found the evidence sufficient to convict all three defendants.
Deputy Tephford's death had a profound impact on the Broward County Sheriff's Office and the community he served. He was remembered as a dedicated officer and a loving father to his three children. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, the Deputy Brian Tephford Memorial Fund was established to support the educational needs of his children. The case remains a somber reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face and the ultimate sacrifice they may be called upon to make in the line of duty.
