On November 10, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Vero Beach, Florida, resulting in the deaths of Shelby Lynn Baker, a 19-year-old pregnant teenager, and her grandmother, Amanda Baker, 68. The incident happened during a home invasion at a residence in the Vero Beach Highlands neighborhood, specifically in the 600 block of 23rd Place Southwest.
The shooting took place around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday.
Both Shelby and Amanda were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, and the unborn child Shelby was carrying also died as a result of the incident. An additional person, identified as Shelby's boyfriend, was injured during the home invasion and sought help from a neighbor's house, where he was found dripping blood and reported that someone had shot up the house.
The Indian River County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Eric Flowers, has described the case as a "heinous crime" and is actively investigating the incident. The residence where the shooting occurred is one that authorities have been to multiple times this year, and they are familiar with some of the residents. However, as of the current date, no suspects have been identified, and the incident is believed to be isolated.
Neighbors have come forward to describe the chaotic scene, including a woman named Jessica Sadley, who lives across the street from the crime scene. She reported that a stray bullet went through her window into her bedroom, narrowly missing her and her family. Sadley immediately called 911 after being alerted by her nine-year-old daughter about a man banging on the back door, seeking help.
The community is in shock, and the Baker family has set up a GoFundMe to cover the funeral costs for the victims. The sheriff's office continues to ask for the public's help with any information that might aid in the investigation.
