On the tragic evening of January 31, 2023, the life of Traci-Marie Jones, a 52-year-old White/Caucasian woman from Bethel, Connecticut, was cut short in an act of domestic violence. A mother of three, Jones was known by friends and family as a vibrant and caring person, the "sunshine of everybody's day," who worked as a talented hair stylist and a health aide.
Her warm presence and infectious laugh left a lasting impression on those who knew her, making the circumstances of her death all the more devastating for the close-knit community.
In the weeks leading up to her death, Jones had taken legal steps to protect herself from her estranged husband, 58-year-old Lester Jones. Fearing for her safety, she had sought and obtained a restraining order on January 17, 2023, telling the court of her husband's threats to kill her and his access to a firearm. The order required him to stay away from her and surrender any weapons. Despite this legal protection, Lester Jones was arrested by New York State Police just days later for making a threatening phone call to his estranged wife.
The protective order, however, did not prevent the final, tragic confrontation. On that late January night, police were called to Jones' Reservoir Street home after reports of yelling. Inside, they discovered both Traci-Marie and Lester Jones with gunshot wounds. Traci-Marie was pronounced dead at the scene, having been shot in the head and chest. Her death was ruled a homicide. Her husband, the sole suspect in her murder, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was also pronounced dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, his death ruled a suicide. The incident was a murder-suicide, leaving a family and community to grapple with the profound loss of a beloved mother and friend.
