On a spring afternoon in Norwich, Connecticut, the life of 19-year-old Camaury Jabezz Nor-clack, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On May 10, 2023, police responded to a call around 1:40 p.m. at a residence on Sandy Lane. There, they discovered Camaury with a single gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to William W. Backus Hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that day.
The incident, which took place at the former home of the suspect, was quickly deemed a homicide by investigators, who believed it to be a targeted attack.
Camaury, born on April 24, 2004, in New London, was a recent graduate of Norwich Free Academy, class of 2022. He had just completed his first year of college, having attended Dean College before transferring to Eastern Connecticut State University to pursue a business degree. He was known as a beaming light to his family, a passionate athlete with a great love for basketball, and a young man with a vision to become a successful business owner. He balanced his studies with work, being employed at Kohl's at the time of his death.
In the days following the shooting, the Norwich Police Department identified a person of interest: 19-year-old Stancovitch Fabre. Fabre, who used to live at the Sandy Lane address where Camaury was found, was soon named as the suspect. An arrest warrant was issued charging him with murder, criminal use of a firearm, and other related charges. Fabre had a pending court case for unrelated motor vehicle charges and was due in court on the very day of the shooting. After failing to appear, a separate warrant was issued for his arrest.
A manhunt for Fabre ensued. He was eventually located and apprehended in October at a car rental lounge in the Miami International Airport by Miami-Dade police during an unrelated investigation. In November 2023, Fabre was extradited back to Connecticut to face the murder charge. He was held on a $3 million bond and appeared in state Superior Court in Norwich.
