On the evening of August 21, 2024, in a quiet East Hartford, Connecticut neighborhood, 54-year-old Upma Sharma of Southwest Asian descent, who was born and raised in Punjab, India, was tragically killed in her home. Police responded to the residence on Hilltop Farms Lane at approximately 10:30 p.m. after receiving a call from a concerned out-of-state family member. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Sharma and her 62-year-old husband, Naresh Kumar, deceased inside the house from gunshot wounds.
Subsequent investigation by the East Hartford police and the state's chief medical examiner’s office determined the incident to be a murder-suicide. It was concluded that Naresh Kumar shot his wife before turning the handgun on himself. Evidence suggests that a dispute occurred between the couple, who had been married for several years, prior to the shooting. A firearm registered to Kumar was recovered at the scene. Authorities have stated that there were no prior reports of domestic violence involving the couple.
The suspect in Upma Sharma's death was her husband, Naresh Kumar, who is now deceased. The case is considered an isolated incident, with no ongoing threat to the public. Another adult was present in the home at the time of the shooting but was unharmed. Sharma was remembered by her family as a dedicated and wonderful mother and wife who found joy in cooking, gardening, and helping to raise her grandchildren. She was also described as a person of deep faith who loved to travel and spend time with her family and friends.
