On January 11, 2023, 16-year-old Aaliyah Cortez was fatally shot during an attempted robbery in Denver's Montebello neighborhood. The incident occurred when Aaliyah and her 19-year-old sister, Jennifer Granados-Cortez, arranged to meet someone they had contacted through Snapchat to sell THC vape pens. Upon arriving at the agreed location, they got lost and were driving slowly near Falcon Park when they were approached by the suspect, Brandon Sandoval, who was 17 at the time.
