In the quiet community of Peyton, Colorado, the life of 17-year-old Caleb Ray 'Baby Ray' Nickerson, a White male, was tragically cut short by gun violence on the night of February 5, 2023. The incident, which also claimed the life of 17-year-old Javier Antonio Gamboa Lopez, unfolded in the Meridian Ranch neighborhood of nearby Falcon, sending shockwaves through the community. In the immediate aftermath, details were scarce, leaving a family shattered and a community searching for answers. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office responded to numerous 911 calls reporting multiple shots fired and discovered a chaotic scene with several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

The investigation into the double homicide proved to be a complex and challenging endeavor for law enforcement. For weeks, no arrests were made, and no suspects were publicly identified, frustrating a community desperate for justice. Investigators from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office cited the reluctance of witnesses to come forward as a significant impediment to their progress. Caleb's sister, Risma Nickerson, made public pleas, urging those with information to break their silence and provide a truthful account of the events that led to her brother's death. She described her brother as a 'class clown with a contagious smile,' believing he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

After a nearly six-month-long investigation that involved a multi-jurisdictional effort, a breakthrough was announced in early August 2023. Authorities revealed that a total of six juveniles had been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. One of the suspects, a 16-year-old male, faced the most severe charges, including two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Caleb Nickerson and Javier Lopez. In total, this individual was charged with 50 crimes related to the February shooting, including multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault with a deadly weapon. The other juveniles arrested faced various charges for their involvement in the incident. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office indicated that the investigation remained ongoing and that further arrests were possible.
